She then apparently spent her visiting hour at the hospital playing Kiss and Chase with other male patients! She told Cathy that Daddy bought all her clothes and make-up for her, and this is how he liked her to look. And when the child visited her father in hospital, or even phoned him from home, she dressed herself in totally inappropriate clothing - a see-through top, fish net tights and high heeled shoes, and wearing lashings of heavy adult make-up. This should surely have rung serious warning bells to Cathy, but it seems to have taken her a long time to work out that something wasn't right. But on her first night with Cathy, the child admits that she sleeps in Daddy's bed every night, and it turns out that Daddy buys all her clothes and spends every spare minute with her she isn't allowed to have any friends or to mix with any other children she's Daddy's little princess and apparently he's her sole companion. Cathy fosters a little 7-year-old girl who has lived alone with her father almost all her life, and when he's admitted into a psychiatric hospital, the child is naturally heartbroken and misses her Daddy dreadfully. The two halves of my life - writer and foster carer - came together in 2007 when I wrote about a child I'd fostered and the book immediately became a number one best seller. Like many writers it was a hobby - something I did almost furtively in my spare time, while working, and then later fostering and looking after my family. In my teens I began writing short stories, articles, a few radio plays, and entering writing competitions. I have always been a writer - from when I was at school, with poems in the school magazine. I have a degree in education and psychology which I was awarded as a mature student. This is in recognition of my experience and qualifications and means that I am often asked to look after children with complex needs or very challenging behaviour. I have been a foster carer for over twenty-five years and am what's known as a specialist foster carer, sometimes referred to as a level 3 carer.
At the same time I became a foster carer, which is the inspiration for much of my writing.
When I left school I held a clerical position in the civil service, which I left to start a family. I live in England and have three children, two birth children and one adopted.
